Just so you know, karma is huge in the Buddhist faith. So in a way, your belief in karma is very Zen and enlightened. Also, being enlightened and compassionate doesn't mean you have to feel bad for or love everybody - especially when they've been crappy to you and yours. But to take a moment out of your day (I call it meditative empathizing) to put yourselves in their shoes and try to understand why possibly they could be so evil and awful, is really good for your soul and in forgiveness. Finally, understanding human dysfunction, ego, etc. is always helpful.
